Stalin's Profile

Stalin was born in 1956 in Kanchipuram, once the cultural capital of Tamilnadu and one of the seven sacred cities of India. On completing his schooling in Yadhothakaari Elementary School, Little Kanchipuram and High School at Dr. P.S. Srinivasan Municipal High School he did his PUC and B.A. (History) at Pachaiyappa’s College for men, Kanchipuram.

1981 was a landmark in Stalin’s career. When he was in his final year M.A. (History), at Pachaiyappa’s College, Madras, his free verse was published in Anandavikatan a leading Tamil Weekly in 1981. In the same year he began to participate in Radio Programmes over All India Radio, Madras. His first book Alaigal a collection of free verse published in the same Year.

He joined All India Radio in 1983, previously served in may stations including the ones at Pondicherry, Tiruchirappalli, Chennai and Ooty and presently he is Programme Executive, All India Radio, Chennai [Madras]. While Stalin was serving with commercial broadcasting service of AIR, Madras his radio version of historical novel Mannan Magal by Chandilyan, an acclaimed Tamil fictionist, was broadcast, bringing in a lot of appreciation for his Tamil style and his ability to adapt the novel to the media demands, When the FM service was commissioned at AIR, Coimbatore on 15th August 2000, the same was the first play for broadcast

He tried his hand in translation thanks to his association with well known Tamil poet Meera and rendered into English the most popular poetry volume of the time Kanavugal + Karppanaigal = Kagithangal.

Stalin’s recent interest is classical Greek plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides. He says his translation venture of Greek drama into Tamil was encouraged by the eminent historian Dr. N. Subrahmanian, and the well known poet critic Dr. R. Balachandran - Bala.

By this Magnum opus (translation of fourteen Greek plays-complete works of Aeschylean and  Sophoclean plays), he is now engaged in Euripidean plays. By this subtle task he has introduced European Pre-Christian drama at its earliest best to the Tamil literary world.

Stalin has been honoured with the the Literary Award 99 by Tirupur Tamil Sangam for his first translation of the Classical Greek play King Oedipus (ஈடிபஸ் மன்னன்) into Tamil.

Stalin has been invited to many literary forums and academic seminars organized by the Sahitya Academy and academic institutions. He also served as a Jury for the translation award 2004, 2007 constituted by the Sahitya Academy and continues to serve as judge for many drama competitions including the ones by The South Indian Artistes’ Association (தென்னிந்திய நடிகர் சங்கம்) Chennai, in 1993
